How to Calculate Age: From Birthdate to Years, Months, and Days
Calculating exact age seems simple but has several subtleties — leap years, month lengths, and what "age" actually means. This guide covers all the methods.
Simple Age Calculation
Age (years) = Current Year - Birth Year
But: Adjust by -1 if the birthday hasn't occurred yet this year.
Example: Born March 15, 1990. Today is January 20, 2025.
The birthday (March 15) hasn't happened yet in 2025, so:
Age = 2025 - 1990 - 1 = 34 years old
Full Age (Years, Months, Days)
Step 1: Calculate complete years (as above)
Step 2: Find remaining months after the last birthday
Step 3: Find remaining days after the last complete month
Example: Born June 8, 1995. Today is February 20, 2025.
Last birthday: June 8, 2024
Years: 2024 - 1995 = 29 complete years
Months from June 8 to February 20: June→July→Aug→Sep→Oct→Nov→Dec→Jan→Feb = 8 months + 12 days
Age: 29 years, 8 months, 12 days

Age in Different Cultures
Western: Age starts at 0 at birth, increases at each birthday.
East Asian traditional: In some East Asian cultures, a person is considered 1 year old at birth, increasing at each lunar new year rather than birthday. This "Korean age" is typically 1–2 years older than Western age.
Special Cases
Leap year birthdays (Feb 29): People born on Feb 29 officially celebrate on Feb 28 in non-leap years (in most countries). They "legally" age every 4 years — though biologically aging at a normal rate!
Estimating historical ages: For dates before official birth records, researchers use census data, marriage records, and other documents to estimate age.
